ROAR MOD NATS REPORT
The first four cars made it cleanly through the right-side sweeper and the table-top that follows, and we're not sure what happened behind because we weren't watching! As the front four, in order came over the little double and hard left-hander, Mike Truhe got it sideways, touching Cavalieri, and Hodapp came through to hold second at the end of the first half-lap. Jared Tebo got through also to take fourth behind Truhe.

As they completed the second full lap, Maifield filpped the BJ on its lid in the same little double, and Hodapp took over the lead, and there's really nothing else to report. Greg maintained a four second lead to the end and took home the 2005 ROAR Modified National Championship.

A massive second-turn pile up on the first half lap scrambled the standings except for pole-sitter Maifield, who emerged unscathed. Greg Hodapp navigated the rapids as did Travis Amezcua up from his 6th spot on the grid. That 180 turn is followed by a small table-top, a 90 left, and a double followed immediately by a 120 left.

Hodapp was off-line from the second turn mess, and swung wide in the 90 left, allowing Travis and Ryan Cavalieri to fly through into second and third over the double. So, at the end of the first full lap, Maifield held a 30 foot lead over Amezcua with Cavalieri right on his bumper, Hodapp just a few feet back, and Francis 20 feet behind Hodapp with a gap to the rest of the field.

Cavalieri rolled after the little triple on lap three, and Travis, Greg, and Matt all went by. At the end of the lap Hodapp tried to turn inside Amezcua in the 180 after the start-finish, but Travis would have none of it. So Maifield had about a half-the-straight lead over Amezcua with Hodapp right behind.

By lap five Amezcua had cut the gap to Maifield in half with Hodapp following closely. Then Ryan made his mistake, flipping it on the left turn right after the double before the start/finish. Hodapp roared by, and motored off into the sunset.

Mike Truhe, fresh from his very close victory in buggy A-1, hung his xxx-4 momentarily on th3e pipe in the 180 at the end of the sweeper on the right side of the track on the first 1/2 lap. The cars started on the back straight and the timing loop is in front by the drivers' stand. The order crossing the line for the first time was Maifield, Cavalieri, Hodapp, Amezcua, and Truhe. There's a little double on the left side of the track coming diagonally back toward the drivers' stand after the left-side sweeper, and Cavalieri bobbled slightly here on the first real lap, allowing Hodapp into second. So the first full lap ended Maifield with a small gap to Hodapp, and Cavalieri right behind him. Just a bit back were Amezcua and Truhe, then another gap to the rest of the field.

In the first part of the second lap Hodapp and Cavalieri were able to close right up on Maifield, and in the 120 right getting on the straight Maifield swung 4 or 6 inches wide. Hodapp took a look but decided against it, and they finished lap two that way.

At the end of the right-side sweeper Maifield got a bit wide again, and this time Hodapp tried it. But he got hung up on the pipe, Maifield maintained the lead, and Cavalieri got through. Truhe and Amezcua followed Hodapp across the line.

On lap four Cavalieri hit the pipe at the end of the left-side sweeper, rolling to the outside, and Hodapp got by into second. This gave Maifield an almost length-of-the-straight lead over Hodapp and Truhe a half-straight behind in third. Essentially, that was the race, as they more or less maintained those positions.

Qualifying is now complete for the 2005 ROAR Modified National Championship. Greg Hodapp won H-4 with his X - 5, meaning that different drivers won all the heats: Maifield #1, Amezcua #2, Cavalieri #3, and Hodapp #4

H-4 was extremely close, with positions 3 through 7 all on the same second, and the top ten all within 5 seconds. Hodapp was a model of consistancy, with all 11 laps between 28.0 and 28.9. Fastest lap of the round was a tie between Mark Pavadis and Ryan Cavalieri, both posting a 27.7. With the race nearly over, both Truhe and Maifield turned a 27.9 on lap 10 but Hodapp answered back with a 28.0 on lap 11 to seal the win.

Travis Amezcua, piloting his xxx-4 this time, took first in round two by a mere .004 seconds over Ryan Cavalieri's BJ 4X4. Travis also set fastest lap of the round with a 27.8. Ryan Maifield had a 27.91 and Greg Hodapp a 27.96.

There is a woods behind the drivers' stand and the stand is on the west side of the track, so in the afternoon the sun starts to get behind the trees and shadows work their way across the track as the afternoon goes on. This means that the water being applied aftyer every race takes a bit longer to evaporate and the track is a bit slower.

Ryan Maifield, in his BJ 4X4, has taken round one of qualifying by 1/2 second over the xxx-4 of Mike Truhe. Another half second back was Billy Easton with a xx-4 and just one tenth behind him in 4th was Greg Hodapp in the X - 5. You can throw a 1.1 sec blanket over the top four qualifiers.

Hodapp's X - 5 set the fastest lap of the round, a 27.6. Next fasterst was Mark Pavidis in the new Kyosho with a 27.7. Easton had a 27.8 and Maifield & Truhe both had best laps of 27.9.

The weather is very hot for Connecticut with temps in the low 90s, but the real problem is the 99% humidity. The weather man says a cool front from Canada will arrive later this afternoon, but that may bring rain and could wash out H - 2. We'll see.

The second round of timed practice is complete, and we have a new TQ in Adam Drake with his xx-4. There are a total of 72 entries in 4WD out of a total field for three classes of about 280, so a good turn-out of 25% of the total is contesting the Championship. Remember that these results, while they are from the computer with transponders, are simply a meaningless day of practice. Qualifying starts for real tomorrow.

We'll start a story where we add stuph to the story as the next few days go by by putting the latest stuff on top. Here's the first story:

Practice for the 2005 ROAR Modified Off-Road Nationals started officially on Thursday July 21st. This clay track produced quite a lot of dust, and on top of that the major teams had agreed in advance to run red Blockheads and red X-2000s with standard foam just as at the Worlds', so traction is at a premium. Many of the Losi cars are sprouting large wings with big air dams on the rear in an effort to hoild the rear end in line in the sweeper at the end of the 110' straight.

They water the track lightly after every race and this holds the dust down, improving traction, but every now and then somebody goes a bit overboard with the hose and that area of the track becomes almost muddy for a time. With 90 degree temperatures and the sun shining brightly, it doesn't stay that way for long. In fact, conditions in various corners change dramatically from the beginning of a race to the end.

These times count for nothing, but they are running the races under race conditions with transponders so the times are accurate and give a fair idea of how the various cars and drivers stack up.
