The 06 Mod Nats got under way officially on Friday August 11 with controlled practice.  This year's format is different than in precious years, with practice from Tuesday to Friday, three qualifiers Saturday and the final qualifier and mains on Sunday.
 
Turn-out is down this year from last, with just 50 entries and a race total of 180.  Last year's figures were 70 and 280.  This year's track is very fast, consisting mostly of 4 straights, two of which have jumps in them and a third with a small double at the end.
 
Planet R/C Raceway is an indoor facility in Indianapolis, Indiana with a racing surface measuring about 100' by 48'.  The major teams have agreed to use pink taper pins here, and that's the tire of choice for the locals so all is good on the tire scene.  Foam is free, and most drivers choose gray-and-white or all gray.
 
The Planet track is usually well watered and very high traction with the tapers dremeled down to almost bald and lots of dope applied.  This week, however, the dirt was torn up and put back down to make a new lay-out.  The dirt was rolled and tamped, and the track is watered every night, but almost full tread is called for, and most drivers are not using traction compound.
 
The last part of practice was run as a qualifier, so all drivers got one practice run using transponders and the IFMAR qualifying format.  The race results sheet from the last race was not posted (This is practice and it dowsn't really matter.) but we know Ryan Cavalieri posted the only 20-lap run of the day, crossing the line with about 3 seconds to spare and turning in about a 20/5:12.  Also in that heat was Dave Montgomery who did 19 laps in about 5:03.  Results de do know, all on 19 laps, include Ryan Maifield with an 07 and Jared Tebo a second back, so BJ took the top four spots.
 
Johnny Logiudice, driving a Predator X - 10 had a 19/5:11, and the fastest Losi was Ronnie Gardner, fresh from his surprosing finish at the Shoot-Out, with a 5:14 followed just .2 back by James Schlick.  The fastest lap was Adam Drake's incredible 14.9, though it's possible Cavalieri or Montgomery had laps that fast.  Drake had lap counting problems and we think he finished with a 5:15 after several exciting crashes.
 
Qualifying starts at 9AM tomorrow, and we'll update you as quickly as we can.
