2004 Hot Rod Hobbies Off Road Shoot Out Final Results 07-11-2004 Qualifying Round 1
Second was Matt Francis who had the fastest lap of the round with a 19.1. Unfortunately, he also had 4 laps in the 20s. Third was Brian Kinwald who had all 19's except for one 22. He also had a 19.3. Mike Truhe had two at 19.3, but three laps in the 20's. Round 2
Matt Francis was running very well except he had one mistake, a 21.7 on lap 2. After that he got an 18.8 and an 18.9 and all his other laps were in the 19's. Travis Amezcua, in third place, had two not so good laps, a 20 and a 21, but he also had two 18.9 's, an 18.8, and an 18.7. Billy Fisher led Laps 2 through 7 and finished second in his heat (which was the same heat as Matt Francis) and had one 18.7. Brian Kinwald's car broke on lap 3 in his heat and did not finish. The car crashed, and when it was picked up by the marshal, the antenna was ripped off accidentally. Round 3
Matt Francis took second, but had five 20 second laps. The track was slow in the morning, but is expected to get faster as the sun heats the track. Round 4
Final Qualifying Order
A Main 1
A Main 1 began with a clean start, everybody freight-training through the sweeper at the end of the straight. Soon, however, Brian Kinwald was able to dive to the inside of TQ Truhe. Then, James Schlick bobbled on the slanted tabletop before the triples and clipped several racers. That allowed Kinwald to get ahead of the pack to get a lead followed by Truhe, Amezcua, and Francis. Everyone else was held up by a crash. At the end of lap 2 Kinwald had a half second lead over Truhe, who was followed by Amezcua and Francis a small ways back. They stayed that way until lap six until Truhe and Amezcua collided in the sweeper. They both recovered quickly and kept ahead of Francis. In the turn following the second triple, however, they collided again. Francis got past them both at this point to take second, and Truhe in third and Amezcua in fourth, trailing a bit. Towards the end of that same lap, Amezcua put it into the tube before the small double; he remained in fourth place but fell way back. Truhe also began having problems with wrecks, and fell from the second position back into the pack. For the rest of the race, Kinwald cruised in first. Francis was in second, but Amezcua turned up the heat. Travis turned the four fastest laps of the race on laps 8 through 11 to catch up to the back of Francis' car. However, he was not able to make the pass, and so finished third behind Francis. Brian Kinwald led the first A Main from half-way through the first lap, and won with a time of 16/5:10. A Main 2
The first lap was pretty clean, with Truhe, Kinwald, Amezcua, and Francis crossing the line nose-to-tail in that order. The order was the same at the end of lap 4, with Truhe holding about a half second over Kinwald, Amezcua about a second back, Francis a half second behind him, and a gap to the pack. Kinwald rolled in the tabletop 90 degree turn on lap 7, falling back to 4th. This jump needs a lot of touch on the throttle. There's a small single just before it, and the inside corner falls off on-camber. You have to land very near the apex of the turn or you'll roll as you land while trying to turn. The marshal at this spot was busy all day. Truhe now had a second lead over Amezcua with Francis close behind and Kinwald a second behind Matt, and the field a full two seconds further in arrears. Kinwald DNFed on lap eight with an over-heated ESC. He said, "When all the lights are on at once, you've got a problem." The next lap Amezcua turned the fastest lap of the race, an 18.6, to close the gap some to Truhe. On lap 11 Truhe rolled it on the 90-degree table-top, but it was a quick roll. Amezcua caught him here, and was going faster, so Travis out-jumped Mike in the following triple and took the lead. The next three laps saw some great driving, as Amezcua maintained a 1/2 second lead over Truhe, with Francis 1/2 second behind him. The pack was nowhere in sight. On the 16th and final lap, Amezcua rolled in the 90-degree table-top, Truhe and Francis motored by, and they finished a half-second apart. Standings after A-2
A Main 3
There was trouble right at the beginning; in the 180 degree left turn after the sweeper, TQ Mike Truhe turned a bit early and hung up the left side of his car on the pipe. Brian Kinwald hit him and knocked him off the pipe and Truhe got away still in first place. This caused Kinwald to spin and collect Amezcua. Matt Francis got through cleanly into second place, however, he then rolled it after the double double on the left side of the track and Amezcua and Schlick passed him. So, the first lap finished with Truhe in the lead followed by Amezcua, Schlick, and Francis. Following that 180 is a 90 degree to the right and on lap two Francis dove inside Schlick to take third place. But the runaway was starting already. At the end of lap two, Truhe had a 2 second lead over Amezcua. At the beginning of lap three, Amezcua hit the pipe in the same place as Truhe had in the beginning. Schlick and Francis got by, but Amezcua retained forth place. Over the next couple laps, Schlick and Francis became involved in several minor wrecks, and Amezcua passed them to take back second. At the end of lap three, Truhe's lead was lower than the length of the speedway, and at the lap four, he had a 4 second lead and was beginning to think about cruise control. Matt Francis would turn the fastest lap of the race with an 18.6 on lap 10. On the last four laps, the cruising Truhe turned laps between 19.0 and 19.6. Second place Amezcua who had to win if he was going to win overall was desperately trying to catch Truhe and turned three 18's in a row. But it was too little, too late and Truhe won by 2 seconds. Congratulations to the 2004 Hot Rod Hobbies Shoot Champion Mike Truhe. Final Points Standings
